Description:
Plants 1–3.5 m tall in flower, suckering from the base. Stem more or less erect, up to 8 cm thick at base. Leaves in a dense terminal rosettes, sessile, linear to narrowly lanceolate, 15–40 cm long, hairless or finely velvety; margin entire or at least in young leaves minutely toothed. Inflorescence up to 1 m long, dense, cylindrical, unbranched; bracts narrowly oblong to linear, 30–60 mm long, more or less pubescent. Corolla 30–35 mm long, greenish, lilac or pale blue, split to the base on the back, pubescent outside; two lateral petals linear, more or less united with middle petals below; three middle petals united to form a lip with linear lobes. Capsule subspherical, c. 7 mm long, 10–veined, velvety, with two valves, 2–3 mm long.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: mildbraedii: after Gottfried Wilhelm Johannes Mildbraed (1879-1954), German explorer, botanist and plant collector, specializing in bryophytes and pteridophytes. He was Keeper at the Berlin Botanical Museum from 1913.
