General Information

Description
Mt Buchwa is crescent-shaped mountain range. It rises up very steeply from a generally dry plateau of c. 900 -1000 m to 1627 m at its highest peak. The rocks contain high concentrations of iron ore and parts of the mountain have been heavily mined until about 2001 when mining operation ceased to be economically viable. The considerable differences in altitude of this isolated mountain with the generally dry surrounding low-veld, generates a much higher rainfall and regular mists on the higher slopes and peaks, resulting in a higher diversity with presence of interesting plant species otherwise restricted to the high rainfall areas of the Eastern Highlands.
