Terrestrial (rarely lithophytic) herbs,
with underground rhizomes, pseudobulbs or tubers. Leaves usually
present and green but in some species reduced or scale-like and
brown; green leaves sheathing at base, sometimes with prominent
longitudinal veins. Inflorescence arising from the base, usually
racemose, rarely branched. Sepals and petals similar or with the
petals much broader, free to the base or with lateral sepals
fused at the base to the column-foot. Lip 3-lobed,
spurred at base, usually with a callus of ridges or
papillae on upper surface. Pollinia 2. Worldwide: c.200 species, tropical Rwanda: 12 taxa. |
