Small erect shrubs, invariably turning blackish on drying. Leaves distinctly discolorous, very shortly petiolate, elliptic to lanceolate, rather thick; stipule sheath usually hairy. Flowers small in many-flowered dense terminal corymbs or panicles. Calyx lobes 4, triangular or lanceolate; corolla shortly subcylindric, slightly widened above; lobes 4. Fruit capsule depressed hemispherical, produced into a conical beak. Seeds few, much compressed, elliptic or oblong.
Worldwide: Two species in tropical Africa.
